Locate Missing Papers
When we can’t find a paper, we become frustrated and often panic. Panic prevents us from thinking logically.
When you can’t find a paper you’ve filed:
- First, re-check the file folder where the paper should be. Go through it slowly. Check each piece of paper carefully, one by one.
- Next, check the file folders which are directly in front of and in back of the folder in which the missing paper should be. It may have been slipped into the wrong folder by mistake.
- Then, check between the folders. Maybe it isn’t in a folder at all, but in the space in between.
Didn’t find it yet? Take a deep breath, then take this step:
- Think of names of folders that look or sound like the one you’re missing. Check those folders.
Still haven’t found it? Take a deep breath, then ask yourself these questions:
- What were you working on when you last had the paper? Could it have been swept up into that project by mistake?
- Did the missing paper require an action? Check your action system. It may be there.
- Where were you when you last had the paper and/or its folder? Could you have left it somewhere else than your desk? Get up and go look!
- Could someone have borrowed the paper or folder? Ask other employees, co-workers, family members, etc., who might have that paper to check for it.
If you still don’t find it, don’t panic! Take a break — at least 15 minutes — to clear your head. Search again (later that day or the next morning) when you aren’t so emotionally worked up. Chances are you’ll find it. It’s only misplaced.
